Brock Purdy: ‘Insane’ how quick Christian McCaffrey picked up 49ers’ playbook

The San Francisco 49ers sit in the driver’s seat toward securing the NFC West division title.

A big piece of the puzzle has been the stellar pay of star running back Christian McCaffrey after the 49ers’ mid-season acquisition. McCaffrey has served as a key component to San Francisco’s rise to potential Super Bowl contenders.

Rookie quarterback Brock Purdy marveled at the All-Pro running back’s ability to quickly adapt and learn the 49ers’ offensive playbook.

“We would always sit down and go over the scripts together before the game,” Purdy said, via Matt Maiocco of NBCSportsBayArea.com. “Literally, he wanted me to read every single play. He would say where he’s lining up, what he’s doing, his assignment.

“And I was like, that’s insane to see how fast he learned stuff when he got here and has been able to know our playbook already inside and out. It’s been wild to see.”

The 49ers need McCaffrey to play a significant offensive role if they hope to make a deep playoff push. With Garoppolo out the Pro Bowler will need to lead with his game-changing ability in the running and passing game.

Purdy has shown the ability to hold his own in the pocket, but having an elite factor behind him takes pressure on him to guide the 49ers with his arm. San Franciso is in an extremely promising position, and McCaffrey’s play and presence are a huge reason for that.
