Browns QB Baker Mayfield’s agent believes contract extension ‘will be done this summer’

As the 2021 season inches closer, Baker Mayfield’s contract situation with the Cleveland Browns becomes a more prominent discussion.

Mayfield is in the fourth year of his rookie deal. As a result the contract includes his $18.8 million fifth-year option for the 2022 season picked up. But, as the 26-year-old remains without an extension, the buzz around him remains prevalent.

Mayfield’s agent, Jack Mills, voiced this week that he believes his client will work out a new deal with the Browns this offseason. (h/t Pro Football Talk)

“But I think something will be done this summer,” Mills said. “As far as trying to get a deal done, I don’t know if it’ll get done. It’s something that would be pretty much in the team’s control.”

It’s quite clear that Mayfield wants a new contract before the 2021 season, but that remains out of his control. The Browns have him under contract through next year, which gives them time to consider whether he’s worth a lucrative extension.

Cleveland likely holds a significant interest in working out a deal but holds some hesitance in paying him top dollar in his next contract. The front office may wait until next offseason to see if Mayfield’s success in 2020 is sustainable beyond one season.

The Oklahoma product has proven that he’s a capable NFL quarterback, but any new contract would cement him as the Cleveland franchise’s cornerstone. The pressure is on Mayfield to prove that he’s worth the risk of inking to a massive new deal that keeps him with the Browns for several more seasons.
