Browns reveal plans for Deshaun Watson in preseason finale

The Cleveland Browns are planning to play star quarterback Deshaun Watson in the preseason finale against the Seattle Seahawks.

The game will mark his first action since undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery last November. The Browns held Watson out in the preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers. In spite of being medically cleared to play, he wasn’t expected to play this week against the Minnesota Vikings.

Cleveland has taken the precautionary route with Watson in hopes of having him ready to go for the season opener at home against the Dallas Cowboys.

Since joining the Browns, Watson has only played in 12 games due to injuries and suspension. He struggled to play with any consistency in the six games he played last season. In 2024, he recorded seven touchdown passes to four interceptions, 1,115 passing yards, and a 42.9 quarterback rating.

Watson is in the third year of his fully guaranteed five-year, $230 million contract extension that he agreed to before the Browns acquired him in a blockbuster trade from the Houston Texans in exchange for a 2022 first-round pick, 2023 and 2024 first-round selections, a 2022 fourth-round choice, a third-round pick, and a 2024 fourth-round selection.

The Texans have benefitted greatly from the move, which has transformed the direction of the franchise with a bright future ahead with their promising young quarterback, C.J. Stroud, leading the charge.

The Browns are eyeing a bounce-back campaign for Watson to guide them to the playoffs behind his production that once made him one of the league’s best quarterbacks.
