Bucs lose Shaquil Barrett for the season due to torn Achilles

The Bucs’ 2022 season continued to head south on Thursday night after falling to the Baltimore Ravens.

The Buccaneers suffered an even greater blow after star outside linebacker Shaquil Barrett tore his Achilles tendon, effectively ending his season.

“It’s a tough break for him,” head coach Todd Bowles said via ESPN. “Any time you lose somebody like that that commands double-teams, it makes it harder for everybody else. He’s been consistent since he’s been here. He’s been productive. He started off playing well last night. It’s just a shame to see.”

Over the last few seasons, Barrett has emerged as a key component for the Buccaneers’ pass rush. He suffered the injury during a third-and-1 run play in the third quarter of Thursday’s game.

Barrett’s production had dipped this season with three sacks in eight games, but he remained a prominent edge rusher. His absence leaves a gaping hole on the edge that the Buccaneers must immediately fill to provide a sustainable pass-rush presence.

Anthony Nelson replaced Barrett against the Ravens. He will serve as the primary option while Carl Nassib will play into the rotation.

Through the first eight games, the Bucs haven’t looked any bit the part of a Super Bowl contender. The team has fallen to a 3-5 record after losing their last three straight contests.

The Buccaneers’ struggles with health offensively have put them in a tough spot. There remains plenty of time to turn it around, especially with Tom Brady at the helm.
