Caleb Williams claims he ‘wanted to be’ drafted by the Bears

Over the last two weeks, Chicago Bears second-year quarterback Caleb Williams has been shrouded by the conversation around his reported feelings about the franchise before he was drafted.

It all stems from excerpts from author Seth Wickersham’s upcoming book, “American Kings: A Biography of the Quarterback,” which lay out that Williams and his father, Carl, considered avenues to try to prevent him from being drafted by Chicago.

During his press conference on Tuesday, he didn’t deny that he had some hesitation about the Bears due to the lack of historical success at quarterback within the franchise.

However, he stated that after visiting the franchise before the 2024 NFL Draft, his desire to join the Bears grew.

“I wanted to come here and be the guy and be a part and be a reason why the Chicago Bears turn this thing around,” Williams said via ESPN. “That last thing that was said in all of that I think is the most important thing is that I wanted to be here. I love being here.”

His previous feelings aside, Williams reaffirmed that he wants to play for Chicago, where he has the keys to the franchise to lead them forward.

The Bears are all in on him being the centerpiece of their future. It has led them to hire former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as the head coach, while using the offseason to strengthen the offensive line further.

Everything is lined up for Williams to lead the charge; it’s now on him to make the best of it.
