James Conner Signs with Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals continue to push toward building a playoff-caliber team this offseason. The Cardinals took another step in that direction after inking former Pro Bowl running back James Conner to a one-year deal. That’s according to Pro Football Talk.

James Conner spent the first four years of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. There, he developed into a significant factor. Following Le’Veon Bell’s departure, he put together a career-best campaign in 2018. He rushed for a career-high 973 rushing yards with 12 rushing touchdowns. As well as that, he had 55 catches for 497 receiving yards and a touchdown.

The last two seasons have been a struggle for Conner to remain on the field. He’s missed nine games over that span. The one-year deal is essentially a prove-it deal for the Pittsburgh product to earn a lucrative contract next offseason.

The 25-year-old has an opportunity to immediately step into a significant role with the Cardinals to replace Kenyan Drake as the starter. Drake chose to depart in free agency, signing with the Las Vegas Raiders on a two-year, $11 million deal.

Conner is the latest big-splash addition for the Cardinals as the team inked former Pro Bowl wideout AJ Green to a one-year deal earlier this offseason. Arizona has continued to tailor their offense around rising-star quarterback Kyler Murray.

Arizona took some significant steps forward last season but fell just shy of reaching the playoffs. The franchise hopes that Murray can take the next step forward in his maturation as a quarterback to guide them to much success in 2021 and beyond.
