Cardinals star J.J. Watt has been designated to return from IR

The Arizona Cardinals finally took a step in the right direction after edging out the Dallas Cowboys in Week 17 action.

Arizona is set to get another boost with star defensive end J.J. Watt receiving a designation to return from the injured reserve on Friday, according to ESPN.

Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman J.J. Watt took his first step back from a shoulder injury when he was designated to return from injured reserve on Friday.

The Cardinals have a 21-day window to activate him to the 53-man roster. Watt will likely sit out the regular-season finale, with eyes toward playing in the wildcard round in less than two weeks.

The three-time Defensive Player of the Year hasn’t played since Week 7 against the Houston Texans on Oct. 24 after suffering a shoulder injury. It was believed that his season was finished. However he’s continued to rehab from the ailment in hopes of making a late-season return.

In seven games, Watt recorded 16 total tackles with 1.0 sacks and one forced fumble. The 32-year-old isn’t the player he once was. Although, he can put forth some impact as a pass rusher as he’s shown an ability to get to the quarterback throughout his career.

His presence will only help Chandler Jones be a more imposing factor against the pass. The Cardinals will monitor Watt’s situation closely over the next several days. It appears he will be back in the fold to help his team push their way toward the Super Bowl.
