Dak Prescott contract extension is Cowboys’ top priority

The Dallas Cowboys are coming off a disappointing season that saw them crumble to fall short of reaching the playoffs.

It has quickly shifted the attention of the franchise over to securing the long-term future. That appears it will start with getting Pro Bowl quarterback Dak Prescott under a new deal as Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones stated on Tuesday as much. “It’s been urgent for us,” Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said Tuesday, via Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. “We certainly want to get that done. That’s our No. 1 priority as we go into the offseason is to . . . hopefully find some resolution to it and get that done.”

Prescott’s contract situation had drawn much attention throughout the season. Although, it died down after it was clear both sides had reached an impasse. There is a strong desire to work out a lucrative long-term deal, but it may come down to how much Dallas is willing to commit to him.

Last season had a tough ending, but the Cowboys have had much consistent success with Prescott under center as he has provided stability to the franchise. He will also be key in helping new head coach Mike McCarthy get the team back on track in 2020.

Prescott is on pace to enter the free-agent market, but the Cowboys have the benefit of being able to place a franchise tag on him if talks break down or stall. There should be more clarity on this front in the coming weeks.
