Giants expected to sign Devonta Freeman to replace Saquon Barkley

The New York Giants are one of the many teams that suffered major injuries in Week 2 of this NFL season. The storied franchise lost arguably its best player with star running back Saquon Barkley going down with a torn ACL and set to miss the rest of the season as a result.

Fortunately, the Giants were able to find a suitable replacement for the time being in veteran Devonta Freeman. As long as Freeman passes thought COVID-19 testing, he’ll help fill the void left by Barkley, via Pro Football Talk.

Free-agent running back Devonta Freeman is undergoing COVID-19 testing with the expectation of signing with the Giants, NFL Media reports.

Freeman’s future in the NFL has been murky at best since leaving the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons moved on at the running back position by signing Todd Gurley formerly of the Los Angeles Rams.

Ever since Freeman and the Falcons parted ways, he’s been looking for a new home in the NFL without much luck. Although it is an unfortunate situation for the Giants, it is an ideal situation for Freeman to prove that he can still be one of the better running backs in the league as he’ll likely get plenty of carries with the absence of Barkley in New York.

Only time will tell if this will benefit both sides, but it seems like a smart move both by Freeman and the Giants franchise.
