Jim Harbaugh returning to Michigan after leaving Vikings interview without an offer

Over the last few days, Jim Harbaugh’s name became linked to the Minnesota Vikings’ head coach opening.

Harbaugh interviewed for the position, increasing the possibility of leaving Michigan. However, Harbaugh reportedly informed the school that he would be returning for the 2022 season, according to ESPN.

Jim Harbaugh called Michigan to inform the school that, despite interviewing with the Minnesota Vikings on Wednesday, he will be returning to the school for the 2022 season, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Michigan was reportedly “elated” to have Harbaugh back for at least another season. The longtime head coach had wanted to take the job with Minnesota. However the franchise elected to head in another direction by hiring Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell.

Harbaugh has experienced much success at Michigan, holding a 61-24 record, including a 42-17 mark against Big Ten opponents. He has helped make the school relevant but hasn’t won a national championship.

He’s coming off his most successful campaign, leading Michigan to a 12-2 record that captured the Big 10 title and a berth in the college football playoffs. The school fell short in the first game to Georgia.

Harbaugh is returning with a top-eight recruiting class that should keep Michigan in the mix as one of the top teams in the country. Beyond that, it’s crystal clear that he wants to eventually return to the NFL to get another chance to coach a team.

That opportunity may come next offseason when new head coach positions open up.
