Justin Fields glad he got traded to the Steelers

Throughout much of last season, Steelers quarterback Justin Fields dealt with questions concerning his future with the Chicago Bears.

All that came to a head in the offseason when the Bears chose to move him in favor of drafting a quarterback with the first overall pick in this year’s draft, which turned out to be USC’s Caleb Williams.

Fields’ career has taken a different path after just two seasons with the Bears, during which time he experienced more downs than ups. However, the Ohio State product sensed that a change of scenery was inevitable.

“We were in the same situation last year with having the No. 1 pick, and it was just a little bit different this year,” Fields said Tuesday, speaking for the first time since the trade via ESPN. “I’m not naive to the fact that — I can read body language and stuff like that. It wasn’t really just a shock to where it’s like, ‘Oh, I got traded.’ I knew what was going to happen beforehand. So I’m just glad I got traded to the spot that I wanted to be at.”

Fields enters a situation where he will likely be the backup to former Pro Bowler Russell Wilson, who also exited a frustrating two-year stint with the Denver Broncos.

Wilson will garner the Steelers starting spot, but it’s an opportunity for Fields to develop while learning from his new teammate.

The move involves plenty of change, but one that could put his career on the path he hoped for all along.
