Lions RB DeAndre Swift would embrace Todd Gurley in Detroit

Since the start of NFL free agency, former star running back Todd Gurley has remained without a new team.

However, traction has picked up with his reported interest in joining the Detroit Lions. As the rumors continue to float around, Lions running back DeAndre Swift voiced that he would welcome the addition of the former Pro Bowler.

“I’d be happy if he came here as well,” Swift said via USA TODAY Sports. “I just want to compete with these guys. Just to have him in the building, that’d be good.”

Gurley is coming off his lone season with the Atlanta Falcons, where he rushed for a career-low 678 yards with nine rushing touchdowns in 15 games played. His production waned, but he provided stability in the backfield.

Gurley may not be the same player physically, but he can add some much-needed fire punch to the Lions’ offense. He can be a game-changing factor in goal-line situations along with contributing in the passing game.

Meanwhile, Swift is coming off a solid rookie campaign where he rushed for 521 yards. He’s eyeing a more significant role in his second year as potentially the featured back.

The addition of Todd Gurley places another proven option in the running game alongside Swift and Jamaal Williams. The Lions are hoping to take a step forward after a busy offseason that involved moving longtime starter Matthew Stafford and acquiring Jared Goff.

Detroit is rebuilding with a chance to push forward an almost entirely new group of offensive talent leading the charge.
