Patriots shockingly part ways with veteran QB Cam Newton

The New England Patriots have been at the center of attention once again during the NFL offseason. All eyes have been on the quarterback battle between one-time NFL MVP Cam Newton and rookie Mac Jones. Now the results are in with a shocking decision from Bill Belichick and company.

According to Mike Reiss of ESPN, the Patriots will not only start Jones under center in Week 1 against the division rival Miami Dolphins, but they’ve also decided to part ways with Newton.

In a stunning turn, the New England Patriots released veteran quarterback Cam Newton on Tuesday, turning things over to rookie Mac Jones as the starter, ESPN has confirmed.

Many anticipate a quarterback controversy that would come down to the wire, but no one seemed to think Newton would be handed his walking papers before the start of the 2021 campaign.

However, there’s a chance that Newton was informed he would be the backup behind Jones and asked the team to release him. Newton will be an intriguing option for teams around the league looking to bolster their quarterback room regardless of how things went down in New England.

The Dallas Cowboys may be where he ultimately lands with the team not sold on their insurance behind star gunslinger Dak Prescott, who is coming back from what could’ve been a career-ending leg injury. Newton would slide in nicely behind Prescott while providing some veteran leadership and peace of mind for the coaching staff if their star struggles to stay healthy.
