Dolphins’ desire for ‘high character’ players may keep them away from Deshaun Watson

As the 2021 season inches closer, the rumor mill around Houston Texans star quarterback Deshaun Watson and the Dolphins continues to heat up.

The Texans are reportedly looking to move off the Pro Bowler. Meanwhile, the sense around the situation is that Watson is eyeing a trade to the Miami Dolphins as his desired landing spot.

Dolphins head coach Brian Flores chimed in on the matter, voicing strong comments that would suggest the team isn’t interested.

“There are a lot of things we weigh when we’re making decisions — fit on the team, overall talent, salary cap,” Flores said via ESPN. “When we’re talking about a player or players, we’re always trying to do what is best for the Miami Dolphins. There are a lot of variables. We want a group that is tough, smart, competitive, loves to play and is team-first. Those are the types of guys we’re looking for.

“We have a high standard for the people we have in the organization. We want people with high character throughout the building.”

Watson is still dealing with lingering legal matters regarding sexual assault and harassment in lawsuits filed by 22 women that could muddy his NFL future. The league is closely monitoring the situation as it will likely lead to a lengthy suspension.

Meanwhile, the Dolphins appear more than comfortable moving forward with second-year quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Miami is hoping he can prove that he can become the franchise cornerstone under center.

Until there is a drastic change in Watson’s situation, count the Dolphins out.
