Raiders HC Josh McDaniels not worried about Jimmy Garoppolo’s status

The Las Vegas Raiders’ quarterback situation has become the talk around the league after Jimmy Garoppolo’s foot surgery.

It has sprouted serious doubts regarding the Raiders’ game plan under center if Garoppolo isn’t ready to go by the season opener in roughly two months.

Despite that, head coach Josh McDaniels has voiced no concerns about Garoppolo’s health as the preseason inches closer.

“I have no anxiety,” McDaniels said via ESPN. “You guys may have anxiety. I have no anxiety.

“I’m not going to put a timeline or a day on anything.”

McDaniels may not publicly voice any issues, but the fact that he cannot put a timetable for Garoppolo’s return to the practice field speaks for itself. The Raiders are taking the precautionary route, but that hasn’t painted an optimistic picture ahead before the 2023 season.

Instead, it’s given way to increased doubt about whether Garoppolo will be able to play Week 1. What also adds to the situation is a contract waiver that would allow the team to get out of the deal if he’s unable to play at all this upcoming campaign.

Garoppolo inked a three-year, $72.75 million contract. However, the left foot injury he suffered on Dec. 4 is putting a damper on his Raiders’ future. There remains plenty of time for him to get back onto the field, but the clock is ticking.

If he remains sidelined through the season opener, Las Vegas will turn to Brian Hoyer to handle the starting duties due to his years of experience playing in McDaniels’ offense with the New England Patriots.
