Raiders linebacker Vontaze Burfict could be suspended for the rest of the season

Over the last several seasons, Vontaze Burfict has been no stranger to receiving suspensions handed down from the NFL. This looks to once again be the case as the Oakland Raiders linebacker may receive the harshest punishment from the league after a helmet-to-helmet hit during Sunday’s 31-24 win over the Indianapolis Colts, according to ESPN.

Oakland Raiders linebacker Vontaze Burfict is facing a ban for the rest of the 2019 season for his helmet-to-helmet hit Sunday on Indianapolis Colts tight end Jack Doyle, sources told ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

The length of the possible suspension shouldn’t be surprising. Burfict is a repeat offender of this behavior, with several questionable plays over his career. This saw him receive separate three-game suspensions in both the 2017 and 2016 seasons. As well as that, he was banned for four games in the 2018 campaign for PED use.

Burfict has beyond a checkered past in this department as it doesn’t appear that he has learned from any of his past mistakes. This has the potential to be a major loss for the Raiders defense as he has been one of their key pieces on that end of the ball.

This could be his potentially final warning with this issue as he has been the biggest culprit of this behavior as the next incident could see him get banned from the NFL. It would be the first punishment of its kind in league history, which could set the standard for the rest of the league for plays like this to be avoided in the future.
