Larry Fitzgerald Despondent Despite Making History

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald moved closer to NFL immortality in Sunday’s 27-10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Larry Fitzgerald entered the game needing five catches to surpass Tony Gonzales with 1,326 career catches. He made that fifth catch with 1 minute and 47 seconds left on a first-and-10 play from the Cardinals 49.

Larry Fitzgerald (36) is now second on the all time catches list, behind Jerry Price who has 1,549.

It was fitting then, that Price was in attendance at State Farm Stadium. However, Fitzgerald is playing his 16th season, and is wise enough not to get carried away with personal accolades.

“I don’t mean any disrespect to guys on the all-time list but it’s hard to take anything good from losing two in a row at home, three home games out of four, and we don’t come out with a win,” Fitzgerald said.

“That’s pretty depressing, so there’s not much to really be happy about.”

He described Gonzalez as arguably the best tight end to ever play the game. Adding that having his name mentioned next to Gonzalez is ‘truly an honor’.

However, he has a reputation for downplaying his personal achievements, and this was no different.

Despite getting a ‘real nice message’ from Gonzalez, Fitzgerald’s thoughts remained with Arizona’s 0-3-1 season.

“I didn’t anticipate being where we are now,” Fitzgerald said.

“We’re just not good enough to make the mistakes we’re making now. Often times, it’s a little bit too late when we finally get going.”

Perhaps if Fitzgerald reaches number one on the list, he will allow himself a pat on the back. For now though, he must refocus for Arizona’s next game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
