Rams Coach Sean McVay wants more from Cam Akers

The Los Angeles Rams began the 2022 season with a disappointing performance. The defending champions suffered blowout 31-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

The contest featured some notable changes to the starting lineup as head coach Sean McVay chose to roll with Darryl Henderson as the starter over Cam Akers.

Henderson received the bulk of the carries in the first half. As a result he finished with 54 snaps rushing for 47 yards on 13 attempts. Meanwhile, Akers had three carries for 0 yards.

The move came with much surprise, as Akers was expected to get the primary touches out of the backfield.

“No matter who you’re talking about, you want to see guys do the little things the right way, compete with and without the ball,” McVay said via ESPN. “There were some instances where there were some positive things and some things that he can do better, but we want to see just an increased level of urgency and accountability snap in and snap out from him.”

Akers’ struggles were part of the Rams’ offensive struggles that saw them finish with 10 points on 243 total yards, including only 52 yards on 2.9 yards per carry.

Matthew Stafford most notably stood out behind his throwing struggles. He only had 29 of 41 passes for 240 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions. The Rams struggled offensively, going scoreless in the second half.

The loss marked the first time in McVay’s coaching career that he fell below .500 in six seasons. Los Angeles will look to bounce back in Week 2 against the Atlanta Falcons.
