Redskins name Case Keenum their Week 1 starter at QB

Throughout much of the offseason and training camp, the Washington Redskins have had questions surrounding their starting quarterback situation remain up in the air.

Veteran quarterback Case Keenum has continued to hold the upper hand in the conversation but had yet to secure the job completely. Head coach Jay Gruden has now finally made a firm decision on the position on Monday by stating that Keenum had earned the starting spot, according to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk.

Washington has its starting quarterback.

Case Keenum will start Week One against the Eagles, coach Jay Gruden announced today.

That came to be expected after rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins experienced his ups and downs throughout the preseason. Meanwhile, Colt McCoy is still on the mend from a leg injury that he suffered earlier this offseason.

Keenum may have won the starting job, but it’s something that could change as the season wears on. The Redskins have continued to speak highly of Haskins, but there is some clear development that he needs to go through before the team put him in there as the starter.

It may just be a matter of time before he takes over as the starter, but at this moment there doesn’t any rush from Washington to put the former Ohio State product into that role. This may also give Haskins a chance to learn from the sidelines until the Redskins believe he’s ready to get a shot to prove that he can be their long-term starter.
