Ron Rivera assures Cam Newton will play for Panthers in Week 1

Over the last few weeks, there have been lingering questions concerning the health of Carolina Panthers star quarterback Cam Newton.

Newton has been dealing with a mid-foot sprain that has forced him to don a walking boot over the last several days. Despite that, head Ron Rivera has voiced that he expects the Pro Bowler to be on the field for Week 1 action against the Los Angeles Rams, according to Michael Shapiro of Sports Illustrated.

Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said on Tuesday “there is no doubt in my mind” quarterback Cam Newton will play in Week 1 against the Rams on Sept. 8.

Although Cam Newton is dealing with a lingering foot injury, there doesn’t appear to be any great concern from the team that he won’t be ready to go for the season opener. The Panthers just appear to be taking a cautious approach to the entire matter.

Cam Newton has just over a week to rest and recovery prior to the tough matchup in Week 1 against the defending NFC champion Rams. This is a game where his presence will greatly be needed in order to move past Los Angeles to get off to a strong start to the 2019 season.

If Newton is unable to give it a go for the season opener, it could see rookie Will Grier take the field in his absence. The team has continued to remain confident in their star quarterback’s availability, but the presence of Grier gives them some sort of a backup plan if things don’t go as planned.
