Seahawks Star DeMarcus Lawrence Admits He Was Almost Ready to Walk Away
After helping the Seattle Seahawks win the Super Bowl, star defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence came quite close to stepping into retirement.
However, Lawrence still had the internal desire to return for a 13th season to help the Seahawks compete for another championship.
“I kinda had my mind made up that if I won, I was done,” he said while speaking to local reporters for the first time since Seattle’s Super Bowl LX victory via ESPN. “But I kinda had a bittersweet feeling in my heart, understanding that with the type of team that we had, we should have been where we were last year. This is where the hard part begins, staying on top.”
This isn’t the first time that Lawrence considered retirement, as he had ventured that route after his 11-year tenure with the Dallas Cowboys concluded. At that time, he chose to sign with the Seahawks, which made him a key piece of the defensive line that guided the franchise to its second Super Bowl win.

Lawrence put together a solid season, where he notched six sacks along with scoring a pair of defensive touchdowns in 16 games that earned him his fifth Pro Bowl selection. Seattle will once again lean on him as a key factor for their top-ranked defense.
“They say it’s no fun when the rabbit has the gun,” Lawrence said. “We’re the ones with the dot on our backs. I just want to see how that feels, see the different obstacles that we can overcome, are we going to stay together in those tough moments throughout a season and just be a part of this brotherhood.”
The Seahawks are expected to be a Super Bowl favorite while playing in arguably the toughest division in the league alongside the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams.
