Steelers non-committal on Ben Roethlisberger returning next season

The Pittsburgh Steelers were one of the best teams in the NFL for the majority of the 2020 NFL season. They raced to a 12-4 record with an aging veteran quarterback leading the way in Ben Roethlisberger. Unfortunately, the end result of the season shed doubt on Roethlisberger’s ability to play much longer. As a result it appears the Steelers might not be sold on his return.

It became clear that Roethlisberger’s best days were behind him at the tail end of the 2020 campaign. That may have led to general manager Kevin Colbert being non-committal about Roethlisberger regarding next season, via Brooke Pryor of ESPN.

There’s a chance the Steelers could be intrigued by all the potential quarterback movement around the NFL during this offseason. The Houston Texans still haven’t moved Deshaun Watson. Additionally, other big-name quarterbacks could be on the move like Carson Wentz, Jimmy Garappolo, Derek Carr and Russell Wilson.

Watson and Wentz seem to be the two out of those named that most likely on the move, but anything can happen from here on out. Pittsburgh may be keeping its options open with the expectation that opportunities could arise in the coming months to pursue an upgrade at the quarterback position for the 2021 campaign.

During the 2020 NFL season, Roethlisberger led the Steelers to a 12-3 regular-season record while throwing for 3,803 yards, 33 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
