Trent Williams remains in limbo without Redskins trade

In the days ahead of the 2020 NFL draft, there has been the trade chatter around Washington Redskins Pro Bowl tackle Trent Williams.

One of the prominent teams linked to Williams has been the Cleveland Browns. Team Chiefs strategy office Paul DePodesta did acknowledge that the Browns had looked into all their options at left tackle that included having the backup plan of pursuing the star left tackle, according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.

“We were going to wait to see what happened there before we really pursued any other avenue,” DePodesta said.

The Browns wound up getting what they wanted in this year’s draft with Alabama offensive tackle Jedrick Wills with the 10th overall pick. It should now effectively put the franchise out of the picture for a potential trade for Williams.

The Browns headed into this offseason with plenty of questions concerning their offensive line. It was one of their areas of weakness that played a notable part in their offensive shortcomings in the 2019 season.

Cleveland will likely look to continue to address that part of the roster further in the rest of the 2020 draft. The Browns are returning mostly the same roster from last season with the hope that things can push forward under first-year head coach Kevin Stefanski.

They have a highly-talented group on the offensive side of the ball that could help push them to playoff contention in the 2020 campaign. A significant part of that will start with stabilizing the offensive line further.
