Veteran NFL QB Matt Ryan announces he’s joining CBS broadcast

Since being released by the Indianapolis Colts, quarterback Matt Ryan has floated around in NFL free agency.

The lack of movement toward finding his next NFL stop has led him to join CBS Sports as an NFL analyst. Ryan took to social media to make an announcement while adding a twist.

“Excited to join the @NFLonCBS family!” Ryan wrote. “Looking forward to breaking down the game this season. P.S. – this is not a retirement post.”

Although Ryan likely won’t be playing in the 2023 season, he clearly isn’t ready to head into retirement. The time away may allow for a better situation to open up for him to add to his NFL career.

At the same time, the reason for him not to announce his retirement could be because that could impact his right to $12 million remaining on his salary that he will receive after the Colts cut him.

Ryan struggled in his lone campaign with Indianapolis, committing 15 fumbles and 13 interceptions. He never found his footing under center, leading him to be benched twice.

His best days may be behind him, but there could be opportunities ahead as a backup if he’s willing to accept that role. Beyond that, he voiced back in February that he believes he still has plenty left in the tank to play.

“I still love playing,” Ryan said via ESPN. “I’m obviously not committed to anything. Got to see how it shakes out. But I still love playing and still feel like, honestly, there’s a lot of good football [left].”

Until then, he will be in the CBS sports studio breaking down NFL games.
