Patrick Mahomes: We Want To Do This Again

Reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes says that the Kansas City Chiefs won’t be like other defending champions.

A Super Bowl title has only been retained once this century, when the Patriots won it in 2003 and 2004. Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs intend to win a second consecutive title. This offseason, the Chiefs have retained the services of 20 of their 22 2019 starters.

Keeping the team together is only one part of the battle, though. Kansas has a brutal 2020 regular season schedule to contend with. As well as that, their rivals have all strengthened in anticipation of challenging the Chiefs.

Patrick Mahomes says that his team won’t be drained or unfocussed because they are the defending champions.

“I think as a team, a lot of the time when you win that Super Bowl, you kind of relax because you feel like you’ve done it,” Mahomes said.

“You went out there and accomplished the goal and you relax a little bit that offseason. But I think with our team, the little bit of difference that I think we have is that it feels like every single guy on our team, once we won the Super Bowl — we definitely celebrated for a week or two — (and then after) it was that mindset that we’re going to get back after it. We want to do this again.”

Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu says he’s not intimidated by the new-look rosters of Kansas City’s divisional rivals.

I think it’s going to be exciting,” he said..

“I’m a football player. I love to play football, I love the competition, I love that part of it. Any time opposing teams can have exciting players on the other side, I think it’s going to lift us naturally. I think we understand what teams are trying to do, what style of play they’re going for.”
