Philadelphia 76ers Equal Lakers Playoff Record From 1962

The Philadelphia 76ers made NBA Playoff history on Tuesday night as they beat the Brooklyn Nets 145 – 123.

The Philadelphia 76ers outscored the Nets 51 – 23 in the third quarter of the game to tie the series at 1 – 1. Those 51 points tie the 1962 Los Angeles Lakers for the most points scored in a playoff quarter. Back then, the Lakers scored 51 in the fourth quarter against the Detroit Pistons.

According to the Philadelphia 76ers players, a halftime tirade from coach Brett Brown inspired them to victory.

“He came in here and said a few cuss words — shocked me a little bit, to tell the truth,” said Jimmy Butler.

“But I like it; that is the type of energy I love — make sure everybody did their job, letting them know we can’t have it, it’s not winning basketball — and we came out and did what we were supposed to do.”

According to backup center Boban Marjanovic, Brett Brown has never been angrier.

“He’s supposed to do that,” Marjanovic said.

“He gave us that energy to show us what we can do.”

Joel Embiid finished the game with 23 points and 10 rebounds in 21 minutes. He sat out most of the fourth quarter due to injury concerns. However, it was Embiid who got the 76ers magnificent third quarter run started.

He went on a personal 8 – 0 run to inspire his teammates into action. The rest is, literally, history.

“I mean, I was out there playing for my teammates,” said Embiid.

“I feel like we as a group, sometimes they need me, and I just felt like just playing through the pain and playing for them, and I just really tried to give whatever I can.”
