Redskins sign Mark Sanchez to backup Colt McCoy

The Washington Redskins are expected to sign free agent quarterback Mark Sanchez in a backup role, according to ESPN’s Field Yates.

Sanchez will back up Colt McCoy after Alex Smith suffered a leg injury Sunday.

Sanchez has worked with three of Washington’s assistant coaches previously and has a short week ahead of him. Washington will travel to play the Dallas Cowboys for Thanksgiving.

At 32 years old, he’s one of the oldest quarterbacks the Redskins were looking at, but he does have the most experience, and Washington may value that especially if they want to make a run in the playoffs.

The Redskins are still in first place in the NFC East at 6-4, but the loss of Smith will obviously be felt moving forward. The coaches have faith in McCoy, but want a backup who can come in and perform if need be.
