Ron Rivera Wants To Build A Quarterback-Ready Team

Washington Football Team head coach Ron Rivera knows that anything could happen in the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft.

The Washington Football team holds the 19th overall pick. There are rumours that the team would like a young quarterback.

However, it is out of their hands. As well as that, the team has new signing Ryan Fitzpatrick ready to start, muddling their intentions.

“Picking where we’re picking, there are a lot of things that can happen,” Ron Rivera said.

“We have targets, we have ideas, we have guys that we like, but that always changes just because of the fact that everybody has a choice. You just never know what’s going to happen at that point.”

There is one thing Ron Rivera is sure won’t happen: The Washington Football team making the same quarterback mistakes it made last year.

Last year, Dwayne Haskins was given the starting berth, partly due to the lack of preseason. There was no time to hold a true competition.

Haskins was benched after four games and was cut entirely with one regular season game left.

Rivera made it clear to Ryan Fitzpatrick that he has to win the right to start by competing against Kyle Allen and Taylor Heinicke.

“There will be a competition,” Rivera said.

“This time, I know who we have as the starter, but he’s going to compete with everybody else,” said Rivera, talking for the first time about Fitzpatrick’s signing. “I want to play the guy that’s going to give us the best opportunity to win, the best opportunity to grow and develop as a football team.”

Further comments from Rivera suggest that quarterback isn’t the most critical issue this offseason. It seems he would like to build a team that he could drop a quarterback in and have him succeed immediately.

“I’ve always thought if you can do it the other way, where you put all the other pieces around and then go out and get your quarterback, that might be a pretty good situation too,” he said.
