Washington Football Team one to watch in 2021 NFL Draft

The Washington Football Team is picking 21st overall in the 2021 NFL Draft despite going 7-9 last year. Could they make a move?

If anything, the NFC East is wide open.

This was proven last year when the Washington Football Team went 7-9 and won the division by a full game over the New York Giants. This despite trotting out a bevy of different quarterbacks including Alex Smith, Dwayne Haskins, Kyle Allen and Taylor Heinicke, the latter starting in the Wild Card loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Entering April, the Football Team still has Heinicke and Allen on the roster, but released both Haskins and Smith over the last four months. However, Washington also added its presumptive starter in veteran journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick, who comes over at 39 years old after a stint with the Miami Dolphins.

On Thursday, Washington head coach Ron Rivera talked about the situation under center while also discussing the team’s draft position, per ESPN:

“Picking where we’re picking, there are a lot of things that can happen. We have targets, we have ideas, we have guys that we like, but that always changes just because of the fact that everybody has a choice. You just never know what’s going to happen at that point.”

While Rivera wasn’t referring to specifically picking a quarterback, it’s tough to imagine the Football Team wouldn’t be interesting in exploring conversations with other clubs. Yes, it would take plenty to move into the top-10 picks, and perhaps the front office sees a roster which is still a few years away from competing for anything of true significance. If that’s the case, trading so far up is folly.

Yet, if the brass sees a roster with an explosive front seven, three real offense weapons in receivers Terry McLaurin and Curtis Samuel, and running back Antonio Gibson, and a promising offensive line, maybe it’s not so absurd.

If Justin Fields, Mac Jones or Trey Lance begin to fall on draft night, Washington would be one of the teams many expect to be in the wash, trying to make a move. If the Football Team found its long-term solution at the sport’s most important position, it could potentially start a new era in the NFC East, a division which has long been dominated on a rotational basis by the other three clubs.
