Several Options Available to 49ers with Second Pick in Draft

The San Francisco 49ers front office and head coach Kyle Shanahan know the team has one of two directions available in the NFL draft with their No. 2 pick.

The top pass rusher to help make the defense stronger or move down to a lower pick and accumulate more picks are the two directions the 49ers have at their disposal.

The decision on the direction taken may not be taken until after the Arizona Cardinals announce the draft’s No. 1 overall pick.

If Arizona takes Oklahoma signal caller Kyle Murray No. 1, it may take a huge offer to persuade San Francisco to trade down. Thus, passing up on Nick Bosa the top defensive end or Quinnen Williams the top defensive tackle available.

However, if the Cardinals decide to pick Bosa at No. 1, San Francisco could be more open to moving down to accumulate their number of picks and still likely have an opportunity for a talented edge rusher in a draft deep at that position.

Another reason the 49ers could decide to trade down in the draft is they currently hold just six picks overall in the entire draft. The 49ers do not having any picks in either the fifth or the seventh round, but hold a compensatory one during the sixth round.

Besides wanting a top pass rusher for their defense, the 49ers are interested in using a second or third round pick to find a wide receiver to team with current receivers Dante Pettis and Marquise Goodwin.

At one time, the 49ers were expected to go after a safety during free agency, but did not sign one. San Francisco picked Adrian Colbert in round seven during the 2017 draft. However, he struggled prior to suffering an injured ankle that ended his 2018 season early. The 49ers are likely to pick a safety in the early rounds of the draft to shore up the secondary.
