Todd Gurley Signs Record Contract Extension with the Rams

The Los Angeles Rams have signed running back Todd Gurley to a precedent-setting contract extension, the team confirmed on Tuesday.

Todd Gurley signed a four year extension worth up to $60 million, with $45 million guaranteed. According to NFL.com, the deal will keep Todd Gurley in L.A until 2023.

The $45 million in guarantees is the largest amount ever for a running back. It’s almost double the current rate for veterans on multi-year contracts. Devonta Freeman and LeSean McCoy each got just under $20 million guaranteed on their most recent deals.

Rams coach Sean McVay said on Tuesday that he was happy to extend Gurley’s contract. “Feel fortunate to be able to work with players like Todd,” McVay said to the team’s official website.

Given Gurley’s achievements, a huge financial outlay by the Rams to secure his services may not be a bad decision.

Gurley, who turns 24 next month, is the reigning Offensive Player of the Year. He finished second in MVP voting, only being beaten by Tom Brady.

In 2017, the fourth year running back recorded 2,093 scrimmage yards. It’s a league best figure and accounted for 35% of the Rams total offensive output.

Gurney also finished second in league rushing in 2017, with 1,305 yards. He’s the third player in NFL history to record 2,000 scrimmage yards, 10 rushing TDs and six receiving TDs.

Since entering the NFL in 2015, Gurley is tied first in rushing TDs (29) and scrimmage TDs (35). He is second in rushing yards (3,296) and third in scrimmage yards (4,599).

The Rams have spent a lot of money tying key members of their roster down during this offseason. Gurley joins Ndamukong Suh and Brandin Cooks under big-money deals in L.A.
