Golden State Warriors ‘Heavy Favorite’ To Sign Anderson Varejao
After 11 and half seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Anderson Varejao is without a team and looking for a new home in the NBA. Varejao was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers before the NBA trade deadline earlier this week and promptly waived ultimately making him a free agent.
With Varejao set to be on the open market and unable to re-sign with the Cavaliers, the veteran center is receiving a considerable amount of interest from some of the league’s best teams. The defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors and Gregg Popovich’s San Antonio Spurs are among the interested parties, but it appears the Warriors have the edge in the race to sign Varejao, according to Marc Stein of ESPN:
The Golden State Warriors have emerged as the heavy favorite to sign soon-to-be free agent Anderson Varejao, league sources told ESPN.
League sources told ESPN that Varejao is leaning strongly toward joining the Warriors now that he has cleared waivers.
Along with arguably the two best teams in the league showing interest in the 33-year-old Brazilian, a few other notable teams expressing their interest as well. The Oklahoma City Thunder, Atlanta Hawks, and Los Angeles Clippers are also rumored to be interested in signing Varejao.
Varejao hasn’t played much this season with the veteran center logging 10.0 minutes per game for the Cavaliers before being traded. Varejao averaged 2.6 points and 2.9 rebounds per game in the limited time he was on the floor for Cleveland.
