Giants bench Russell Wilson in favor of rookie Jaxson Dart
Heading into the 2025 NFL season, the New York Giants were a hot topic of discussion due to the team’s quarterback situation, with three viable options to be the starter under center.
The obvious choice for the Giants was to go with veteran Russell Wilson over Jameis Winston and rookie Jaxson Dart. After three games of going with Wilson, head coach Brian Daboll and company have decided to make a change, with the team naming Dart the new starter.

The New York Giants are planning to bench quarterback Russell Wilson in favor of first-round rookie Jaxson Dart after three games, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Tuesday.
The change to Dart has always been inevitable, but it was a matter of timing. Most teams don’t like thrusting highly-touted rookies into the first, especially with two viable veterans on the roster.
However, Dart must be showing the Giants brass something special in practice, as they feel confident he’s the right player under center moving forward, according to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan.
Dart has been preparing for this moment ever since the Giants traded back into the first round to get him to New York. He has done nothing but impress since taking the field in the spring. Dart started the spring with the third-team offense and quickly worked his way past Winston early in the summer.
It’ll be interesting to see how Dart fares now that he’s been given the keys to the franchise. There’s a chance he’ll be on a short leash if he struggles early.
