Mike Vick Says He Can Go One More Season

Humbled veteran quarterback Mike Vick believes he still has one more season in him before he calls it a career. Question is, is there a single NFL team out there that feels the same way?

“I’m 35, about to turn 36,” Vick told the media this week. “I’ve got one more dedicated season in my blood, if somebody needs me to come in. But I’m kind of happy where I am right now.”

Vick was thrown a lifeline last year; a one-year, sub-$1 million contract with zero guaranteed money to be the backup quarterback in Pittsburgh. The team was reeling from a season-ending injury suffered by original backup Bruce Gradkowski, and with the Steelers not yet ready to throw their support behind Landry Jones, Vick was the guy. Or, at least, the guy behind the guy.

But when Ben Roethlisberger was ruled out for four weeks early in the season, Vick was the new starter, and actually fared well in his first two appearances. In relief of Big Ben, he helped his team escape St. Louis with a win, and played a turnover-free game against Baltimore in a losing effort the following week.

Question marks began to form in week 5 against San Diego, when only a miracle deep throw, a blast-from-the-past scramble and a last-second Le’Veon Bell TD sealed an improbable win. By the third quarter of the next game, Vick had thrown for only six yards. A hamstring tweak forced Jones into action, in what should be the final game of Vick’s career.

“I’ve got my healthy, my kids, my family,” Vick added. “The game has done so much for me in terms of relationships and opportunities to take care of myself and my family. I’m just thankful.” Far be it from us to try and get inside Vick’s headspace, but it sounds like even he seems ready for his tumultuous career to finally end.
