Mets Noah Syndergaard Hits Two Home Runs in Win Over Dodgers
East coast baseball fans might not have seen the latest display of power hitting the New York Mets put up on Wednesday night in their game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Mets lead the majors in home runs through 33 games with 51 and have hit 49 in their last 25 games. The Mets also lead the majors in home runs on the road with 35.
On Wednesday night, the Mets display of power came from an unlikely source – starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard, who hit two home runs during the game.
In the process, he became only the second pitcher in Mets franchise history to hit a pair of homers in the same game.
Syndergaard hit his first home run in his first appearance at the play, which was a solo shot. He added a three-run homer his next time up. He knocked in all four of the Mets runs in their 4-3 victory over the Dodgers.
Syndergaard called the two home runs a dream saying he cannot even remember hitting two during his play in little league as a youngster.
Syndergaard is also the only pitcher in MLB that has three home runs that were 400 feet or more since making his debut in May of 2015.
Second is Jake Arrieta with two. Syndergaard’s pair of home runs traveled 407 and 400 feet respectively on Wednesday night.
This week has been quite eventful for Mets hurlers. On Saturday, Bartolo Colon who is 42 became the oldest player in the history of major league baseball to hit his first home run.
In the current turn of their rotation, Mets pitchers have 6 hits in 15 at bats including a pair of doubles, three home runs, seven runs batted in and four runs scored.
Colon will start Thursday’s final game of the current series with the Dodgers for New York. He could have a hard time trying to match Syndergaard’s numbers since Colon will be facing Clayton Kershaw the ace of the Dodgers.
Walt Terrell was the only other Mets pitcher to hit a pair of home runs in the same game. He did that in August of 1983 versus the Chicago Cubs.
Prior to Wednesday, the last pitcher to hit two home runs in the same game was Micah Owings in August of 2007.
Jim Tobin a former pitcher for the Boston Braves holds baseball’s modern day record in the big leagues for pitchers with three homers in one game against the Chicago Cubs in May of 1942.
