Romo Reportedly Seeking Trade to Broncos in Offseason
Although it appears the Dallas Cowboys have all but completely moved on from Tony Romo, the veteran quarterback reportedly has no intentions of spending the rest of his career as a backup. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Romo will be eyeing the Denver Broncos as a primary playing destination next year via trade.
Rapoport also cited the Bears, Jets and Cardinals as potential landing spots, with each of those teams set to field major question marks at QB entering 2017. But he added that Denver general manager John Elway would be most likely to pull the trigger, if he feels “Paxton Lynch needs another year and that Trevor Siemian isn’t the guy.â€
The pairing would be a fine one, provided Romo can return to full strength after extensive stretches on the sideline. With Denver’s defense showing little sign of regression, Romo could serve as another stopgap franchise quarterback – a la Peyton Manning – giving the team one more chance at a championship before it overhauls its roster.
And while Dallas owner Jerry Jones has expressed zero interest in seeing Romo in another uniform, keeping him as the backup behind Prescott for a whole ‘nother year doesn’t feel like a harmonious situation for anyone.
Careers can turn quickly in the NFL. Entering 2016, a healthy Romo was supposed to helm one of the most explosive offenses in the league. An ugly injury suffered in the preseason handed the reins to rookie phenom Dak Prescott. In Romo’s absence, Dak didn’t just hold down the fort. He stole Tony’s job, and will remain the starter until he gives head coach Jason Garrett a good enough reason to pull him in favour of the veteran.
So while Romo’s diehard fans may be crushed to see him playing elsewhere next year, it’s easy to forget that this year’s job is far from finished. The Cowboys are 9-1, cruising towards the top seed in the NFC, with undoubtedly the NFL’s best backup quarterback ready to step in at a moment’s notice. Tony’s tenure in Dallas may still have one more plot twist to deliver.
