Raptors President Masai Ujiri Says ‘No Question’ Team Will Try To Re-Sign Kyle Lowry

The Toronto Raptors will try to keep their talented backcourt intact once again this summer. Last year, it was DeMar DeRozan who hit the free agent market and this time around it’ll be point guard Kyle Lowry.

Although Lowry will have his fair share of suitors in NBA free agency this summer, the Raptors want to keep their starting point guard right where he is. Team president Masai Ujiri recently spoke about Lowry and the team’s intentions to re-sign him when the time comes, via Scott Stinson of the Toronto Sun:

“You have to remember that, everything that has happened to this team in the last few years, Kyle has been at the forefront of that,” he says. Will Ujiri try to bring him back in the offseason, when the 31-year-old becomes a free agent?

“No question,” he says. “Before the injury, you could argue he was one of the top five players in the league this season.”

Lowry is having a breakout season with the Raptors. The 31-year-old may have started off slow in his first season in Toronto back in 2012, but since then he’s improved his numbers every single year leading to an appearance in the Eastern Conference Finals last season.

The veteran guard has been dealing with a wrist injury which has kept him out considerable time this season, but when on the floor, as Ujiri mentioned, Lowry is among the best at his position.

In 56 games this season, Lowry averaged a career-high 22.8 points, 6.9 assists, and 4.8 rebounds per game while shooting 46.3 percent from the floor and an impressive 41.7 percent from beyond the three-point line.
