Monty Williams has agreed to join Brett Brown’s 76ers coaching staff
The Philadelphia 76ers are coming off a promising 2017-18 season. A stellar year saw them reach the playoffs for the first time in six years.
Philadelphia has already moved quickly to strengthen their coaching staff under head coach Brett Brown by adding former New Orleans Pelicans head coach Monty Williams, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Monty Williams has agreed to a deal to join Brett Brown’s coaching staff as the lead assistant with the Philadelphia 76ers, league sources told ESPN.
Williams had been holding a position in the front office with the San Antonio Spurs over the last two years. He had spent five seasons at the helm with the Pelicans. There, he led the team to a pair of playoff appearances. He held a 173-221 in 394 career games with the franchise.

Following that tenure, he spent one season as associate head coach under Billy Donovan with the Oklahoma City Thunder 2017-18. During this time, he dealt with the unfortunate loss of his wife, Ingrid. The car accident back in February 2016 led to him to San Antonio to be with his family.
The 46-year-old is set to step in to replace assistant coach Lloyd Pierce. Pierce has taken the head coach job with the Atlanta Hawks. He had been interviewed for the opening for the Milwaukee Bucks before Mike Budenholtz was chosen to take the job. In his NBA coaching career, he was also an assistant coach on the staff for the Portland Trail Blazers for five seasons.
