Trey Burke a Canny Addition for the Philadelphia 76ers

Trey Burke has joined the Philadelphia 76ers, General Manager Elton Brand announced on Tuesday.

The 26 year old point guard’s contract was not disclosed, per team policy. Trey Burke played last season with the New York Knicks and then the Dallas Mavericks.

In that time, he played 58 games. Trey Burke averaged 10.9 points, 1.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 19.4 minutes per game.

He ranks in the top 40 among NBA assist to turnover numbers, with a 3.24 ratio. In total, he made 159 assists with 49 turnovers.

“Trey’s experience as a ballhandler matched with his scoring ability makes him a good fit for our roster,” Elton Brand said. 

“We’re excited to welcome him to the 76ers and look forward to the positive impact he can have on our team.”

Burke played his college basketball at Michigan between 2011 and 2013. He helped the Wolverines to a 31-8 record and an NCAA title game berth. As a result, he was awarded the Associated Press College Basketball of the Year. As well as that, he won the John R. Wooden Award and the Naismith College Player of the Year award. 

Burke was unanimously selected to the First Team All-Big Ten, and was the Big Ten Player of the Year. 

Following that success, he was drafted No. 9 by the Minnesota Tomberwolves in the 2013 NBA Draft. His rights were transferred to the Jazz, and his debut season for Utah earned him an All-Rookie First Team appearance.

Burke has averaged at least 10 points in five out of 6 NBA seasons. That’s an average of 10.9 points, 2.1 rebounds and 3.6 assists over 361 games.

The fact he is regarded as a veteran at just 26 years old speaks to how accomplished he already is. A player like him will hope to hit the ground running in Philly.
