Patriots place Josh Gordon on IR, may waive him

The New England Patriots have placed wide receiver Josh Gordon on injured reserve with a knee injury.

A source confirmed the news to ESPN’s Field Yates, who tweeted about it Wednesday afternoon. The team said Gordon did not participate in Tuesday’s practice with a knee/ankle injury. However, he was stretching on the field during the portion of practice that was open to media.

The Patriots are expected to use their two designated injured reserve return spots on offensive tackle Isaiah Wynn and rookie wide receiver N’Keal Harry, which means Gordon cannot be reactivated for the 2019 season if he is placed on the team’s IR.

Gordon was inactive for Monday night’s game against the New York Jets. He was knocked out of the previous game against the New York Giants on Oct. 10 after it appeared he injured his left leg in the second quarter.

He finishes the season with 20 catches for 287 yards and one touchdown.

In a separate tweet, Yates said the Patriots could negotiate an injury settlement with Gordon, which would open the door for him to sign with another team and play again this season, once he is healthy.

Gordon is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the season ends.
