Chargers lose star RB Austin Ekeler for 4-6 weeks

The Los Angeles Chargers are still making their transition into the post-Philip Rivers era. It got off to a decent start with rookie quarterback Justin Herbert showing a lot of promising. Unfortunately, the team hit a speed bump with running back Austin Ekeler going down with an injury.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Ekeler, who went down during Week 4’s matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has suffered a hamstring injury that will keep him out for quite some time.

Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler is expected to be sidelined four to six weeks with a hamstring injury and a hyperextended knee, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The initial diagnosis has Ekeler missing as much as a month and a half due to the hamstring injury. Although, the up-and-coming back will get a second opinion.

Ekeler is seeking a second opinion on his injuries and timeline for a return, according to Schefter.

In four games during the 2020 NFL season thus far, Ekeler has rushed for 248 yards. As well as that, he has a touchdown on 49 carries. He has also hauled in 17 receptions for 144 receiving yards.

Even though Ekeler wasn’t putting up monster numbers before going down with the hamstring injury, his presence will be sorely missed, especially with Melvin Gordon now playing for the division rival Denver Broncos. Ekeler’s inspired play was one of the main reasons the team was willing to move on from Gordon, but now he’ll leave a gaping hole at running back.
