Eagles expected to retain Doug Pederson for 2021 season

The Philadelphia Eagles are limping to the finish line this season with the once-competitive squad heading into Week 17 with a 4-10-1 record and a lot of questions about the future of the franchise.

One of the major questions being asked in Philadelphia is whether the Eagles will keep head coach Doug Pederson for next season. That question may have been answered, according to ESPN.

Coach Doug Pederson is expected to return to the Philadelphia Eagles next season, although he does have a meeting scheduled for Tuesday with owner Jeffrey Lurie to discuss plans for the 2021 season, sources told ESPN on Saturday.

Another major concern for the Eagles moving forward is quarterback Carson Wentz. Although Pederson has been a strong supporter of Wentz, the writing appears to be on the wall in Philadelphia with Jalen Hurts being the future under center and Wentz wanting out as a result.

There’s nothing set in stone at this point in time and Pederson could still be sent packing, but there will clearly be some changes with a new defensive coordinator expected to be among those changes after the season.

There will be changes in Pederson’s coaching staff, sources told ESPN. Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz is on an expiring contract and is not expected to return, sources said.

Despite the uncertain future in Philadelphia, Hurts has given the team some hope moving forward. Hurts has shown flashes of brilliance in his short time as the starting quarterback and that may be enough to get this team back on track in the post-Wentz era.
