Brock Purdy’s status for Week 6 still uncertain for 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers head into Week 6 action with uncertainty around quarterback Brock Purdy.
The 49ers remain in a bind trying to figure out Purdy’s return date, but head coach Kyle Shanahan voiced that the team isn’t considering putting him on the injured reserve.
“It hasn’t been a thought on [placing him on] IR,” Niners coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday via ESPN. “He’s progressing.”
Purdy has missed three of the first five games due to a toe injury, but it hasn’t hurt San Francisco, who sit atop the NFC West at a 4-1 record.
Backup Mac Jones has pushed the team forward, especially after the Week 5 overtime road win over the Los Angeles Rams. He shone against the Rams, completing 33-of-49 passes for 349 yards, throwing for three touchdowns, and holding a 113.1 passer rating.
Jones has been much more than just a placeholder for the 49ers, showcasing his ability to lead the 49ers toward sustained offensive success.
In three games, he has 905 passing yards, six touchdown passes, a 66.7 completion rate, and a 99.1 passer rating. He’s been able to accomplish this without the team’s primary passing game weapons in star tight end George Kittle and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

Meanwhile, wide receivers Ricky Pearsall and Jauan Jennings are dealing with nagging injuries. The 49ers hold the tough task against the red-hot Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who sit atop the NFC South with a 4-1 mark.
San Francisco will likely continue to lean on star running back Christian McCaffrey as the primary offensive factor.
