Pistons shockingly fire head coach Monty Williams after one year
After just one season, the Detroit Pistons fired head coach Monty Williams.
The Pistons parted ways with Williams only one year into his six-year, $78 million contract, which he signed last offseason after the Phoenix Suns let him go.
Detroit struggled mightily in their lone campaign under Williams, finishing with a league-worst 14-68 record, including setting an NBA record with 28 straight losses.

The Pistons failed to make any notable progress with their young roster. Instead, this raised questions concerning Williams’ future, which led to his loss of his job.
Beyond that, Detroit has been on a downward spiral over the last five seasons, holding a 94-290 combined regular-season record. The franchise is heading into a fresh start, hoping that their young roster can take the next step forward toward being a factor in the Eastern Conference.
The Pistons haven’t reached the playoffs since the 2018-19 campaign. Over the last five seasons, the team has progressively fallen further south, topped by back-to-back years recording at least 65 losses.

The Pistons possess a youthful roster and the fifth overall pick in this year’s draft. JJ Redick was rumored as a potential candidate, but the Los Angeles Lakers chose to hire him as their next head coach.
Detroit is moving in a fresh direction with Trajan Langdon as its new president of basketball operations. That puts pressure on him to find a new head coach who can create a strong culture and environment for the organization and finally get the franchise back on track.
