Ravens part ways with wide receiver Diontae Johnson

After weeks of speculation, the Baltimore Ravens have decided to part ways with veteran wide receiver Diontae Johnson.

The Ravens waived Johnson on Friday, a day before facing the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday night. Baltimore acquired the veteran wideout from the Carolina Panthers on Oct. 29, and he can be claimed off waivers starting Monday at 4 p.m. ET.

Johnson’s short stint with the Ravens was marred by internal issues and a lack of production. He recorded one catch on five targets for six receiving yards on 39 total snaps in four games.

His tenure took a frustrating turn after he chose not to play against the Philadelphia Eagles on Dec. 1 and then was excused from team activities this past week.

Baltimore traded for Johnson in the hope that he could add much-needed depth and production. The front office sent a fifth-round pick to Carolina for him along with a sixth-round selection.

Before the trade, Johnson was the Panthers’ leading passing game option with 30 receptions on 58 targets for 357 receiving yards and three touchdowns in seven games.

Johnson will likely hit the open market that could see his former team, the Steelers, attempt to add him for the stretch run into the playoffs. He has plenty of familiarity with the offense and could prove to be a valuable piece.

In his first five-plus seasons, he has 422 catches for 4,726 receiving yards and 28 touchdowns. He posted his best campaign with the Steelers in 2021 where he had 107 catches for 1,161 receiving yards and eight touchdowns.
