Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa reacts to criticism from Cam Newton

The 2025 NFL season has been rough for the Miami Dolphins, to say the least. Tua Tagovailoa and company will enter Week 4’s matchup against division rival New York Jets without a win and with many questions about the direction of this team.

With the Dolphins struggling, the attention has turned to star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Former NFL MVP quarterback Cam Newton recently criticized the Dolphins star, claiming Tagovailoa is making too much money to play like he has this season on ESPN’s First Take.

“Tagovailoa is making more than Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, Baker Mayfield, Matthew Stafford, Jayden Daniels,” Newton said. … “What you’re being paid, what you’re asked to do, what you have the capability of — from one quarterback to another, I look at the situation like come on, dawg. Especially when you’ve got a Ferrari and a Lamborghini and other amenities that other quarterbacks wish they had.”

Newton’s comments sparked a reaction from Tagovailoa, who claims it is easy to criticize from where the former Carolina Panthers star is sitting these days.

“Well, anybody can play quarterback in this league then. I want to see anybody on the streets come and play quarterback,” Tagovailoa said. “Cam is doing his thing for sure, but I think it’s easier to be able to hold a clicker and talk about it that way or talk about what someone else is doing wrong when you’re not going out and having to do the same as them.

“I think it’s easy to do that. I think anybody can do that. I don’t think anybody can play quarterback.”

Both of them are right in a sense, as Tagovailoa does need to prove his worth, while it is easy to criticize when sitting behind a desk rather than being in the action on the field in the NFL today.

However, the pressure continues to mount for the Dolphins quarterback, as head coach Mike McDaniel’s job is on the line and perhaps so is Tagovailoa’s role as the starter if this team can’t win games moving forward.
