Jets Mulling Trades, Gregg Williams Headed to the Titans and the Ravens Wrap Things Up At Home

For the New York Jets, there’s never too far out of the news cycle and the story for this week was a potential trade for cornerback Darrelle Revis. But in a second look, it may make sense to trade fellow cornerback Antonio Cromartie.

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton has been reinstated by the league but his former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is still waiting for his.  He first needs a NFL team to hire him and apparently the Tennessee Titans are very interested.

And with one week to go for the Super Bowl, the two teams are New Orleans bound. On Saturday, the Baltimore Ravens held their final home practice and will head to the Big Easy on Monday.

The current odds have the San Francisco 49ers winning the Super Bowl (-3.5, 47.5 o/u).

Will the Jets trade Revis or Cromartie?

For Revis, 2012’s season ended in Week 3 when he tore his ACL. As he looks toward the new season, his future with the Jets is on the line after rumors swirled this week of a possible trade.

The top player has a hefty payday coming his way: he’ll make $6 million plus $3 million from base pay and bonuses. His contract terms don’t allow the Jets to tag him in 2014.

If the team doesn’t sign an extension with him, he could leave as a free agent; monetary sense says pay him sooner than later.

As he rehabilitates his knee, there’s a new general manager at the helm, John Idzik, and change is coming. But now there’s a story that the Jets may instead explore trading fellow Cromartie, per ESPN.

He has a high trade value and 2012 may have been his best year to-date. By trading him, it could save $8.2 million in cap room ($2.5 million in dead money) while a Revis trade could cost the team cap room ($12 million in dead money vs. his current $9 million cap charge).

The clock is ticking as Cromartie is due a $2.3 million roster bonus on day No. 3 of the league year (March 15) while is Revis is to receive a $1 million roster bonus on day No. 5.

Williams headed to the Titans

Williams has supposedly already met with the Titans and they are said to be very interested in making him their assistant coach. But not so fast.

Before a contract can be finalized with the team, Williams will need NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to reinstate him. This could come early next week.

ESPN is reporting that with a Williams reinstatement, contract obstacles are not expected as they two sides have worked together before: Williams worked with the Titans from 1993-2000.

He also has been a former colleague of head coach Mike Munchak; they were on the team together from 1997-2000.

Because most employees get a reference before starting a new job, Williams has received a thumbs-up from former Titans and St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher. Williams was to lead Fisher’s Rams defense in 2012 but had been suspended by the league for the season; the team did not reinstate him at the end of the season.

Ravens Hold Last Home Practice

The Baltimore Ravens are still in the 2012 season and on Saturday, they held their last home practice.

As they prepared for next week’s Super Bowl, coach John Harbaugh tried to make last week a business as usual one. He said, “We’ve had a great week. We had an excellent practice. The guys are very sharp and they’re excited. We’ll have to go down there and do just as well (or) do better.”

With almost a week in New Orleans before the game, there’s plenty of time to get in trouble. There’s 5 to 1 odds that either a Raven or 49er will be arrested.
