NCAAB Update: An Upset And Almost Upsets

Yesterday, I threw out a couple of games that I thought were worth your attention.  Mainly because, the betting lines were fairly close, featured ranked teams and had implications on conference championships.  I did not necessarily steer you in the wrong direction, both were great games, but there were a pair of near upsets and a huge upset that overshadowed them.

First, as already discussed here, Syracuse was defeated by Boston College of all teams.  Syracuse was No. 1 on the AP Poll heading into the game, whether or not they hold onto that spot remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, the No. 2 teams in the nation did not have a good night either.  Florida took on Auburn and was barely able to hang on to win the game 71-66. Auburn led most of the game and Florida was lucky it was able to muster up the comeback victory.

No. 4 Arizona, also a team that was at one time No. 1,  barely edged out Utah in overtime to win  67-63.

With three of the top teams in the nation losing or almost losing to teams they should have easily defeated, the college sports world is a buzz.  Either people are saying that the losses and near losses are inexcusable or that the pressure is simply getting to these teams that have huge targets on their backs.

If the latter is the case, we have to understand that we shouldn’t read too much into these performances then.  All great teams have off nights, especially when you are a college kids playing high-pressure basketball at the top level.  When you are ranked that high every team you play brings their absolute best, so when you are not at your it becomes obvious.

Either way, the AP Top 25 Poll should be interesting this week  with plenty of shake ups.  The question of who should be No. 1 is a tough one to answer with all the favorites performing very poorly last night.  Do not expect Boston College from popping up in the top 25, despite their upset victory, with their 7-19 overall record.
