Bucs wideout Mike Evans in no rush to work on contract extension with Tampa Bay
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers came into the 2017 NFL season with high hopes of being one of the best all-around teams in the NFC. Jameis Winston and company were thought to be a stacked squad and a legitimate threat in the conference but failed to live up to expectations resulting in the team missing the playoffs.
Heading into the NFL offseason, there’s a lot of questions surrounding the future of the franchise. One question is whether the team will try to work out a long-term contract extension with star wideout, Mike Evans.
Apparently, Evans is in no rush to ink a new deal with the team with his agent making it clear he’ll play out the rest of his contract with Tampa Bay, via Trevor Sikkema of Pewter Report.
But, as the time draws near, the question centers on when that pay day will happen. Evans’ agent, Deryk Gilmore of Day 1 Sports & Entertainment, told PewterReport.com that he and his client are in no rush. Last year, the Bucs picked up the fifth-year option on his rookie contract and he is set to play the 2018 season making $13.2 million.
“We’re not doing any negotiating (right now). We’re just going to wait and play it out,†Gilmore said. “We think that the Buccaneers are a great organization. We feel that they really care about Mike; they care about the direction of the franchise and where it’s going.â€
Evans having no interest in signing a contract extension at this point probably isn’t the best sign. The 24-year-old may be looking forward to being a free agent after the 2018 NFL season.
The Bucs still have a chance to make something happen in the near future if the can get all of this talent on the same page moving forward. Evans is a vital piece to the team’s success and if Tampa Bay doesn’t have a good season in 2018, he may look elsewhere in free agency.
Unless the team makes massive upgrades this offseason, Tampa Bay’s odds of contending for a playoff spot may not be all that great, but there’s no question they have the talent.
