Celtics Crush Knicks in Season’s Biggest Rout
The New York Knicks were already off to a miserable start this season, but their 2013-2014 campaign hit a new low on Sunday.
The Boston Celtics jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, finishing with a 114-73 win against the Knicks at Madison Square Garden. The 41-point margin of victory marked the largest in any NBA game this season.
“It’s just one of those games where it happens,” Knicks guard Raymond Felton said, according to ESPN.com. “You hate that it happens, you hate to get beat like that inside your building. It was nasty game, it’s a bad taste in our mouth right now.”
After beginning the season with somewhat high hopes, the Knicks have now fallen to a dismal 5-14 record and as one might expect, their recent woes have put head coach Mike Woodson on the hot seat.
“It’s a step backwards. I thought we had turned the corner somewhat,” Woodson said, taking much of the blame. “I can’t have our guys stepping on the floor doing what they did tonight.”
Meanwhile, the Celtics – who were expected to enter a rebuilding phase this year – improved to 10-12 with the win behind a strong 23-point, seven-assist performance from Jordan Crawford. Jared Sullinger put in 21 points of his own to help the Celtics climb to fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings.
“It was just fun to get a win like that in here because I’ve been on the other side of it a couple times. It’s good to get a win against the division,” Crawford said.
Amazingly, despite owning the second worst record in the East, the Knicks are just 3.5 games back of eighth position and with games against other underperforming teams from the East coming up on their schedule, could conceivably get themselves back into the playoff picture before the end of December. However, considering the Knicks are coming off their worst loss in more than three years, it would probably be wise to avoid wagering in favor of them in upcoming games.
